WALKING TOUR PORTOFINO

Portofino is located on the Italian Riviera in Liguria, between the city of Genoa and Cinque Terre. It is an ancient village whose origins date back to the pre-roman age. In fact the name Portofino comes from the “port of the people of Delphi”: Greek trade people travelling on the sea from the Magna Grecia to the city of Marseille.  The small protected bay of Portofino was perfect to rest and repair ships during a thunderstorm.

PORTOFINO WALKING TOUR: HOLLYWOOD AND GLAMOUR

The modern story of Portofino begins in the 30’s, when Portofino together with Santa Margherita became the headquarter of the German Wehrmacht.  When the Germans were forced to escape from Italy, in 1945 Hitler ordered to destroy every military site.  Portofino was saved by the brave Jeany Watts, a Scottish lady married to a German diplomatic and living in Portofino during world war 2.

Some years later, with Grace Kelly Hollywood discovered Portofino. Many movie stars spent and spend fabulous days in  Portofino. Frank Sinatra performed in Portofino in 1987.

THE ITALIAN RIVIERA

Together with Portofino you can also visit Santa Margherita, which is maybe less popular but also worth of a visit. Best thing is to arrive to Santa Margherita Ligure from the sea, and remaining deeply impressed by the openness and vitality of its port: it still evokes the historical relationship between the town and the sea catalysing the social and economic life. Visit the centre of Santa Margherita with the incredible “Basilica” nestled in the heart of the town, the Church of Santa Margherita d’Antiochia dominates the main square. Construction began in 1658, building a new Baroque church upon the remains of an earlier 13th-century chapel.
